Willie G., our beautiful Jack Russell, was diagnosed in May, 2015 with Heartworm Disease. He had been tested previously and it always came back negative. So it came as quite a surprise when he was positive.

The treatment of Heartworm disease is challenging to say the least. The hardest part is keeping Willie G. quiet. The oral medications prior to the actual first injection have some minimal reactions but not as bad as I thought they would be. He is taking it all quite well but this may not be the same for all. We are gearing up for round two and three of the medications. My concern now is possible clots or infection from the adult worms dying.

My previous vets had never relayed how important it is to keep them on year round prevention. All my dogs are inside except when they go out for walks or to do their business, but just one bite is all it takes! It costs less in the long run and your animals will be healthy.

I had been through this before in 1975, before I think they even knew what the disease was all about. My Siberian Husky, Chinook, showed all the typical symptoms of heartworm disease:

  • Coughing
  • Lost weight
  • No appetite
  • Dull coat
  • No energy

I chose back then to have him treated and he ended up living another 5 years. Chinook did suffer from heart damage and some damage to his other organs. It sure took a lot out of him.

Today there are so many options in prevention and now treatment. I am thankful to all at Gilbertsville Veterinary Hospital. The facility is clean, the staff is friendly and very helpful. Dr. Helfer is wonderful! So down to earth and doesn’t mind spending time and answering any and all of my questions. I know Willie G. is in the best hands!!
